A Heart Bug, also known as a Holter monitor, is a small, portable device that continuously records the electrical activity of your heart, usually over 24 to 48 hours. Unlike a standard ECG, which captures a single snapshot, a Heart Bug records your heart rhythm continuously through your normal daily activities, including sleep.
Your cardiologist may recommend a Heart Bug if you are experiencing palpitations, dizziness, or a suspected irregular heartbeat that has not shown up on a resting ECG.
The device is fitted at our Alexandra Hills clinic and worn externally, usually attached to your chest with small electrode patches and connected to a lightweight recorder. You can go about your normal daily activities while wearing it, though you may be asked to keep a brief diary of any symptoms you experience.
Once the monitoring period is complete, you return the device to BK Heart, and your cardiologist reviews the recorded rhythm data to identify any abnormalities.
Your cardiologist reviews the full rhythm recording and prepares a report, which is discussed with you and shared with your referring GP. If an abnormal rhythm is identified, your cardiologist will explain what it means and recommend appropriate next steps.
