A stress echocardiogram combines echocardiography with exercise, or in some cases medication induced stress, to assess how well your heart functions under physical demand. It provides more detailed information than a standard exercise stress test alone by directly imaging the heart before and after stress.
This test is often used to investigate chest pain, assess known or suspected ischaemic heart disease, and evaluate heart valve function under stress conditions.

This test is for patients who need more detailed imaging of heart function under stress than a standard exercise stress test provides, or for patients who are unable to exercise and require medication induced stress imaging instead.
A stress echocardiogram adds ultrasound imaging of the heart before and after exercise or medication induced stress, in addition to ECG and blood pressure monitoring. A standard exercise stress test uses ECG and blood pressure monitoring alone, without imaging.
A standard echocardiogram assesses the heart at rest, while a stress echocardiogram compares heart function at rest and immediately after exercise or medication induced stress, providing additional diagnostic information.
